It really is quite mind boggling how much I don't know about babies.
Apparently you need a moses basket as well as a crib for carrying the baby around the house when it's asleep. Seriously? Bugger that. Although I hadn't really thought about where it was going to be during the day. I've assumed it will be with me, sort of... umm... doing stuff. Crying and being fed and stuff.
And why do I have to wear a nightdress in hospital? I haven't worn a nightdress since I was 8. Well, not one particularly suitable for hospital anyway. I'd frighten the med students. What's wrong with pyjamas?
And apparently I need slippers for my stay in hospital. Slippers?
And what's the difference between a sleepsuit and a bodysuit? Apparently I need three of each.

A moses basket isn't essential - we had one, but I would recommend borrowing, rather than handing over dosh as you only use it for the first 3 or 4 months, depending on size of baby.
Re nightshirt - I bought one of those 'old man' nightshirts with buttons down the front for breastfeeding. PJs are fine, but i was surprised how big I still was after giving birth - so again, you'd need pjs that are plenty sizes larger than your usual size, but then you shrink v fast.
Slippers? pah - haven't owned a pair since I was a nipper, and if you have an epidural your feet swell up like balloons anyway. Depends on how clean the floor of your hospital is really - I just wore big socks.

Oh and sleepsuit/bodysuit - one is a vest type thing and the other one has arms and legs. 3s good number because you don't know how long you'll be in hospital for.

Last time I was in hospital I couldn't do up the gown myself so I asked a nurse to help me. She started laughing at me... I had forgotten to put on the stringy knickers they give you.
She laughed even harder when I told her that I thought they were a hairnet...
When I woke up after the op, she had shaved one of my legs.
I had an operation on my ear, for godsakes...
I guess she got the last laugh there...

I think thay might prefer you to wear a night dress rather than pyjamas as it's probably easier to... er... get at the bits they need to get at when you're giving birth.

I've got this 3m length of material that I wrap around me with baba in it. It stops them crying and you can get on with "house-wifie" stuff.

(Beachhutman - better avert your eyes now!) Norah, PJs may be fine, but if your nurses are anything like mine were they will be checking out your ladybits regularly for things I won't go into detail about here - every two hours or so. It's simply to facilitate this as you may be too sore to be pulling on/off PJ bottoms. (this certainly applies for a c-section, which you may not be planning on but which may happen anyway)

I had visisons of wearing a foo fighters t-shirt but by the time I was ready to deliver I didn't have one big enough (read: tent-sized) to cover the bump and my nethers. I wore a fetching Primark number instead that was ultimately ripped (well, ok, CUT) off of me in the middle of a corridor on my way to emergency surgery post-delivery.
Scared? You will be.

When my sister was gravid (good word, ay - I looked it up specially) and I phoned her from where I was working abroad (on the "She's 6 months pregant and nobody thought to mention it to me??" principle, I asked if she'd starting sorting out all the stuff she needed.
"Well, I've emptied a drawer ..she said vaguely.
It was a good few minutes before I realised she meant that was for the baby clothes.

It's also great to get rid of items you would normally throw out.
